iOS 5 Featuring iCloud for iPhone 5

Apple’s new iCloud service may hold the key to one long-standing problem of iOS - synchronization of saved game files between devices. Other enhancements coming to iOS 5 will spill over to benefit gamers.

If you use an iPhone and an iPad, for example, you can install the same game on either device, but there’s no easy to way share game files between them. So if you get to level 30 on Angry Birds on your iPhone and fire it up for the first time on your iPad, you’ll find yourself back to level 1 on that device. It’s frustrating.

iCloud will enable applications to back up their settings files and documents to the cloud, and thus synchronize to each iOS device. Apple didn’t specify during the WWDC keynote (or in the information published on its Web site) if this technology could apply to saved games, but it is providing access to those Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to developers, which opens that door for iCloud to complies.

Fable 3 Performance Simple Guide

I was playing on Fable 3 for about 30 minutes this morning and didn't encounter the freezing or performance dip issues even with Shadows set to Very High.
And why?
Well, I re-enabled the game's v-sync option to cap the framerate at 30 fps!!!

If I allow the game to run at 60 fps with the in-game v-sync option disabled and v-sync forced via the driver or D3DOverrider then every time I open a chest or dig for treasure then the framerate plummets to 20 fps from 60 fps and I have to press START twice to fix it.

Save Your Money by Using Microsoft Security Essentials

Over the past 12 months, this free software - Microsoft Security Essentials - has proven itself as effective as anything you would pay for and now is also available at no charge to small businesses. Microsoft Security Essentials was released one year ago and if you’re among those who continue to make annual payments for commercial antivirus software, it’s time to put that money in your pocket, delete whatever you’re using, and install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

I still hear from some who are reluctant to pull the plug on McAfee or Norton because MSE doesn’t scan e-mail. But it doesn’t have to. Nothing in an e-mail message itself can harm your computer. It’s what might be attached to e-mail that poses a risk and MSE, as with other antivirus software, scans attachments as they are written to disc.

Furmark v1.7.0

FurMark is a very intensive OpenGL benchmark that uses fur rendering algorithms to measure the performance of the graphics card. Fur rendering is especially adapted to overheat the GPU and that's why FurMark is also a perfect stability and stress test tool (also called GPU burner) for the graphics card.

The benchmark offers several options allowing the user to tweak the rendering: fullscreen / windowed mode, MSAA selection, window size, duration.

This benchmark requires an OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 5/6/7/8 (and higher), AMD/ATI Radeon 9600 (and higher) or a S3 Graphics Chrome 400 series with the latest graphics drivers.

Super PI Mod v1.5

Super PI is a computer program that calculates pi to a specified number of digits after the decimal point - up to a maximum of 32 million. It uses Gauss–Legendre algorithm and is a Windows port of the program used by Yasumasa Kanada in 1995 to compute Pi to 232 digits.

Cinebench 11.5

CINEBENCH is a real-world cross platform test suite that evaluates your computer's performance capabilities. It is based on MAXON's award-winning animation software CINEMA 4D, which is used extensively by studios and production houses worldwide for 3D content creation. MAXON software has been used in blockbuster movies such as Spider-Man, Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia and many more. CINEBENCH is the perfect tool to compare CPU and graphics performance across various systems and platforms (Windows and Mac OS X) and it's completely free.

The test procedure consists of two main components - the graphics card performance test and the CPU performance test.

MemTest 4.0

MemTest is a RAM tester that runs under Windows. It verifies that your computer can reliably store and retrieve data from memory.  A correctly functioning computer should be able to do this with 100% accuracy day in and day out. A computer that fails these tests, perhaps because of old hardware, damaged hardware, or poorly configured hardware, will be less stable and crash more often. Even worse, it will become even less stable over time as corrupted data is written to your hard disk.

Prime95 v26.5

Prime95 is the name of the Microsoft Windows-based software application written by George Woltman that is used by GIMPS, a distributed computing project dedicated to finding new Mersenne prime numbers. As of September 2009, 13 new Mersenne prime numbers have been found by the network of participants, and, on average, a new Mersenne prime is discovered approximately every year.

Over the years, Prime95 has become extremely popular among PC enthusiasts and overclockers as a stability testing utility. It includes a "Torture Test" mode designed specifically for testing PC subsystems for errors in order to help ensure the correct operation of Prime95 on that system. This is important because each iteration of the Lucas-Lehmer depends on the previous one; if one iteration is incorrect, so will be the entire primality test. The stress-test feature in Prime95 can be configured to better test various components of the computer by changing the fast fourier transform (FFT) size. Three pre-set configurations are available: Small FFTs and In-place FFTs, and Blend. Small and In-place modes primarily test the FPU and the caches of the CPU, whereas the Blend mode tests everything, including the memory.

CM Storm Enforcer Review : Conclusion

For the observant ones out there, you will recognise some similarities between the Enforcer and HAF 912 Plus. It adopts similar features, size and styling. I would suggest the Enforcer carries with it the success of the HAF 912 Plus with a facelift and by that I mean the front facia. The Storm Enforcer does not disappoint in that regard, with a sharp look that strikes a great balance between sleek simplicity and aggressive undertones. It is an aesthetic that certainly has gamer appeal, but the feature set and looks will likely appeal to a wider audience, since a good case is a good case, whether it's marketed to gamers or not. This bodes well for Cooler Master, but also for consumers looking for greater flexibility and quality in a well-rounded mid-tower setup.

Functionally speaking, the Enforcer has a tidy and well-organized interior that shows attention has been paid to the details that make a difference. The feature set here is innovative outstanding, which is often a rarity in mid-tower case design, offering some flexible cooling options, and versatility of control with the system setup and operation. Clearly, this case is not targeted to the modders in the crowd; it is squarely set on the gamer market, and in that sense the Enforcer is a very well-designed and solid case. Showcasing a great combination of sharp aesthetics, extensive features, and outstanding quality, the Cooler Master Storm Enforcer is an great choice for a mid-tower case.

Pros
+ Brilliant build quality
+ Similar body but different looks to HAF 912 Plus
+ Installation is a breeze
+ USB3.0 header

Cons
- No fan control
- No thumbscrews for expansion slot covers

CM Storm Enforcer Review : Installation

We will be installing an i7 2600K on the ASUS P8P67 Deluxe motherboard with a 4GB set of G-Skill RipJawsX DDR3 RAM. The system will be powered by the Silverstone Strider 1000W PSU. For Video Card we will be mounting an EVGA GTX-570. Drive wise we will mount a WD Raptor HDD and one DVD±R burner.

The first thing we noticed when we opened up the accessory bag for our standoffs and screws is a handy little adapter to use for installing our standoffs. When the system was assembled, you'll see how nicely this system looks all mounted and ready to go. Working inside the CM Storm Enforcer was relatively easy considering it is a Mid-Tower chassis.

Cable management is hardly a challenge with the Storm Enforcer; Cooler Master Engineers did a great job of designing the Storm Enforcer to enable even those with little skills in cable management to do an awesome job.

CM Storm Enforcer Review : Interior Look

Removing the side panels is very easy. Thumbscrews hold the side panel with the window in place whilst standard screws hold the plain side. Side panels slide off to reveal a memorable interior. Those familiar with the HAF 912 Plus and the HAF 912 Advanced will notice key similarities with the layout and options available inside Enforcer. Take a look at the all black interior. Very nice. More new features for the Storm Enforcer are found here starting with the 2.5” drive bracket you see sitting in the middle of the floor panel. The interior supports up to twelve 3.5” and/or 2.5” devices. The upper portion of the hard drive cage is removable and 90 degree rotatable. Several options become available when the hard drive cage is detached. The 2.5” hard drive cage can be relocated to the top of the fixed 3.5” hard drive cage on the bottom. The newly freed up space allows long graphics cards such as the ATI HD5970 and NVIDIA GTX 590 to fit with no problem.

Behind the motherboard tray there is a rather large CPU cooler backplate cut-out. Cable management cut-outs are essential nowadays and its good to see the Enforcer continues this trait.

Do we have room for cable management? Not a lot, but more than I have seen in a good deal of cases lately.

A feature we are happy to see continued is the tool-free design of the Cooler Master Rocker style 5.25” drive locks. Simply push the rocker right, slide the drive in, push the rocker left and you are done. A simple design that is totally effective. Just below the optical drive bays you see the 3.5” bays and to the left the 2.5” drive bay. Remember that you will have to remove the upper 3.5” cage in order to install those monstrous video cards.

Below is a close up view of the massive Red LED front intake fan. The opened front panel hides a removable dust filter; the Storm Enforcer keeps the intake accessible for easy cleaning.

Starting at the bottom, we have an area designated for the PSU. This has a filter and I am pleased to see anti-vibration rubber to reduce noise and metal on metal scratching. Cooler Master has provided a rather large perforated area which will allow even the longest power supplies, though you will have to remove the 2.5” drive cage sitting on the bottom of the case.

Look at the expansion slots, there are 7 expansion slot covers each with ventilation for better airflow inside Enforcer. I'm surprised to see no thumbscrews here though, with just the standard screw - you will need to get the screwdriver out.

We have a pre-installed 120mm fan for the rear exhaust, this fan has the 3-pin to molex adapter already fitted. So its really up to you whether you want to plug directly into the PSU or motherboard header. At the top as already mentioned, there is no pre-installed fan but space to installed 1 x 200mm or 1 x 140mm fan or 2 x 120mm fans.
